I tōna haerenga ka tūtaki ia ki ētahi tāngata rerekē - ko ētahi he pai, ko ētahi atu kāore i te pai"--Publisher's website. Te Huakore is a sequel to the Arohanui and Meariki graphic novels. A Tūrehu child is born, who is designated as a precious guardian of the peaceful coexistence of the peoples of Te Wao. However, the rest of his people are massacred by the evil sorcerer Tānekikiwa and his human-devouring familiar, who seek to kill the child. Fortunately his grandmother escapes with the child, although she gives her life to do so. The child is discovered by the mysterious Moepapa and his two-headed dog, and taken to the leaders of Ngāti Kaitipua. Pehi and Hineamuru foster the child, and raise him as their own, naming him Taramea. One evening, Taramea and his older brother Parekoi see a meteor falling on the mountain of Matawehi, a sign that disaster will come upon Ngāti Kaitipua and Te Wao. Although Taramea flees from his home, he realises how the integrity of Te Wao can be restored. On his journey he meets strange beings, both good and evil.
