Meariki is a captive of Ngāi Kūwai. Her tasks are to serve the wishes of Te Mihiau, the rangatira, and to protect Hinamuru, the puhi of the iwi. When Hineamuru is kidnapped by a wizard, it is up to Meariki to rescue her. Meariki and Pehi (Hineamuru's sweetheart) tread a dangerous path. On the way they meet strange beings, both good and evil. 'Although she is only small [as her name 'Meariki' meaning 'small things' suggests], she is capable of achieving greatness, and finally she meets her own destiny.
