Ben Hoadley, bassoon, with various performers.Summary: As one of New Zealand's foremost composers Gillian Karawe Whitehead sits in a unique position to weave classical and Maori together in modern composition. Here in Arapatiki, she has focused on a series of works encapsulating a sense of place ie. each piece has a visual or spiritual link to a certain place. Several poems set to music from Glenn O'Brien and Glenn Colquhoun are a large part of the recording along with the introductory work from Tuhonohono. New Zealand bassoonist Ben Hoadley performs on all but one track giving the tracks a connecting thread and continuance. The only solo piano work is Arapatiki performed by Stephen de Pledge where he translates the "path of the flounder" from the opening bell bird song to the changing tides across the flats.
